Three Bathers is set on the beach where four dead trees stand eroding with the tides. This companion piece to Three Statues is simliar to the theme of several of my paintings: trees resembling human forms and water. I explored this theme with several of my Driftwood Series paintings.
The only unusual aspect of this work is the third bather is appears in the negative space betwen the two middle trees. The use of negative space is something I've began exploring as early as "Tree of Life" which I did in Beaufort, SC in the 1980s. Below is a photo of driftwood resembling teh setting for my painting:
